At a church talent show this month, I did my Speed Sonnet party trick. The audience called out words for me to stick into a "Shakespearean Sonnet" (which is a form, not a requirement to say "forsooth"). Iambic pentameter, rhyme scheme ABAB CDCD EFEF GG.
The words they called out were
umbrella, fall, raccoon, beach, serendipity, everlasting, wave, forest, macaroni, and vacation.
The challenge was to write the sonnet before three talent show acts were done. I finished in 1.5
I wave the beach goodbye (for now it's fall)
and venture back through forests to my home.
Umbrellas do not like the Coast at all
unless for summer sun they make a dome.
Raccoons may now the coastal dumpsters raid
for macaroni and vacation treats.
They prance and prowl and need not be afraid
of little dogs or kids who steal their eats.
Oh, that the sun could everlasting be
and shine to warm my face each day I live,
but no, the winter serendipity
its own endearing warmth can also give.
I bet you thought I couldn't get it done!
